How about one of you meteorite guru's addressing this question of legality? Not only is it difficult to see through all of this hollywood fog but when you do ask the proper entity the answer might not be what you were expecting. BLM, dept of archeology, mining, the Smithsonian etc.. I suppose this is about money or just being plain old sneaky huh! One thing for sure, you had better not get caught in a known strewn field here in the U.S.

Then I see this meteorite hunter show on TV and they barely scratch the surface discussing the limitations of metal detecting or meteorite gathering here in the states. Even a hammer stone might be the property of the state, its freaking ridiculous.
If things keep up politically here in the great 48 then you'll be seeing me soon. Dont worry I'm one of the hard workers not the whiners:-)

@Agremen I hope people here in the states make themselves aware before jumping into this seemingly mundane activity before they are deemed felon science and artifact robbers. I've read horror stories about people caught metal detecting, something you never hear about. I laugh each time I see a metal detector commercial because the only legal place to detect is right were everyone and his uncle detected and picked over yesterday.. like public parks and beaches, the rest is off limits.

@guitarplayer4real IDk if the laws are different in canada but in 2 years of public digging ive never got arrested!
-
@meteorfright What about these collecting/ gathering laws? I have been over and over this... I see sites like yours then I begin asking the correct entities and they all tell me its fully illegal to detect, dig and /or collect any artifact from the ground.
How do you get away with this?
-
@Agremen Dont waste your money. I bought a 400 dollar detector 4 years ago then got caught using it on BLM public land and almost got arrested a few years back. Not only is digging illegal but collecting ANY artifact from public land is also illegal. These shows never mention this and always show people selling meteorites as if everyone is doing it...
Well, I'd be really careful "collecting". Astronomy is my hobby for over 20 years now and I have done my homework on this.

but seriouslly a metal detector wouldnt help?

i wish i found a little chunk of meteorite... ive always wanted to own one. my backyard is all landfill i guess so when i was little me and my bro would dig up my lawn in search of gold and stuff like that. never found anything other than chunks of coal though. and a knife. and some bones... and 2 of my dogs puppies that died that my mom burried. lol
Hi! NICE WORK! i've always wanted to be a meteorite hunter. My family purchased some land in Southern Colorado in the southern San Luis Valley on the boarder of New Mexico. I know a lot of meteorites have been found in the area. I was thinkin about buying some detection equipment. What devices do you use?
PS Whats the first song in this video?

Hi,
Check my website under meteorite Q&A and I talk about what type of equipment to use. This song and all of them are originals, written and performed by my nephew.

Yes,
Pretty much all dry lake beds have a chance of holding meteorites.

Meteorites are purchased by, Museums, Universities, and Private Collectors to name a few. Just search meteorite on ebay and see.

Hey Ruben! I too am interested in meteorites. How cool would it be to find one! Could you tell me how to find one (what areas are likely to hold them, how do you recognize them?) Please click reply at the bottom of this when you get the chance to answer so that I get an e-mail that you replied. Thanks for your time!P.S. great video!

Hi,
Thanks for the comment! I'll be posting a video on or before Aug. 4th, 2007 that will show everyone for the first time how and where to find a meteorite. Then I'll post one new adventure every month or so that will also show step by step how to do this.
