WOW! Wonder how four lowlife douchbags can not like this. What! just because she has healthy interests and doesnt lie legs splayed in the back alley of a club on a saturday. You go Abby. You are a true rolemodel.
@ROOKTABULA Mommy and Daddy did not foot the financial bill. She was sponsored in order to do it. Ya didn't happen to notice the number of corporate logos on the boat did you?
BTW, I was doing similarly risked activities when I was her age, even younger. Going up into the wilderness in areas known to claim lives of experienced hikers. For days or a couple of weeks at a time with nothing more than could be carried on my back. And I didn't even have an EPIRB.
This American princess cost Australian tax payers 100's of THOUSANDS of dollars that could have been used for the people who's wages were taxed for THEIR benefit.
If she's well off enough for mommy and daddy to enable this, tehy, or their country, (US), should compensate the people of Australia.
If you want to take massive risks, (BP?), then you should take on the costs that can result.
@hydroplaneracing not too mention the many underprivileged kids that are overcoming real odds everyday. hell, there are cubans and haitians sailing in inner tubes to find freedom. but c'mon if she was Black,Mexican etc. you guys would be ready for child protection to take her away. whites reward white stupidity. remember the little wht boy who stole the fam. car being chased by police? he and his fam. were guests on GM America and was told how cute it was.
its annoying when they keep saying youngest, she'll be the youngest american to sail the world cause jessica watson is the youngest to sail the world right now but she's australian and do they really sail the world cause they go past, america, south america, africa, austrailia but it doesn't say anything about europe, asia, or antarctica, don't get wrong, i think its amazing that these young people can do this, i certainly wouldn't have the guts to do it, so kudos to all of them
Okay let's understand something here, you can't go skydiving until you are 18 years old. Sailing by oneself in rough seas can be just as dangerous.
If her parents wish to have their little darling out at sea by herself and the law states that it is alright (child endangerment may be an issue) then that is fine with me but let us remember that a rescue out at sea is a very expensive undertaking and no one but Ms. Abby Sunderland and her parents should have to foot the bill.
