We met Stephen Marshall in the winter of 2011 in Petaluma, California, where he builds little rooms and houses on wheels. We liked his ideas: why build expensive, permanent housing space to take care of shorter term needs which may change anyway? His company is http://littlehouseonthetrailer.com and he builds everything from a tiny, simple one room studio space to a complete livable home. But as we are discovering everywhere in the tiny house movement, zoning for permanently occupied dwellings under 500 square feet or so is the bugbear. In this interview Stephen talks about zoning, about how the way we live is changing what we need to live in, and about the design of small spaces.

@monagalme With Spray foam insulation the R factor is 7 for every inch it only has a shelf life of about 3 months so it is made to order.

Love your little houses, Steve. I agree that the 'inspectors', land use/zoning laws are out dated and need to be overhauled. Times they are a-changing and people with land could be a market for 'camping areas' for all the little houses on wheels that wish to stay where there is work or to visit America in comfort and style. I look forward to that day when 'zoning' catches up with our vision.
