I first heard George Donaldson sing this song. Fell in love with it. I have to say I love both versions. Such a lovely song.

@sorebutton You have a right to be proud. What a great generation he was part of. God Bless you and yours.

I lost my dad on February 25, 2012. My eyes cannot shed more tears. He was a great man, a provider, and served his country in WWII. His generation is the "PROUD" generation. I am so lucky to have enriched his life. At 89 he died with dignity and pride. God Bless all the fathers and the strong sons & daughters who support them in time of need. :)

The Fureys version is better because it was written for their father but this one comes mighty close.

The last few years of his life my grandfather let us know his love for this song. It became "that" song that many of us have for a loved relative. He wasn't a perfect man by any means, but this song means so much and can make any of us cry anytime we hear this song.
I was a young man in my early 20's when my father died (1985). Shortly thereafter I came accross this song. The tears flowed then... as they do now.
My father did make me the man I was then.... a far better man than I am today. The mess I made of my life since he died was totally down to me, for he taught me better.
I've got my self back on track these days and try to be the man I should have been... The man he had every right to expect me to be!
The tears have NOT all been shed! I miss him!

It sure must've been hard for John to get through this song without tearing up.
