Chaco Culture National Historical Park

The Chacoan Culture inhabited Chaco Canyon from about 850 A.D. until 1250. Often referred to as the Anasazi and more recently as the Ancient Pueblo Peoples, they were the builders of a massive complex of "Great houses" with significant astronomical alignments, both solar and lunar. Chaco Canyon is believed to have been a ceremonial center. See: http://www.nps.gov/chcu/

The Chaoans had an extensive road system. They did not go around obstacles, they went over them. Here is one example. The stairway is probably 40 to 50 feet in the air. Other examples can also be seen at the park. Another method was to create ramps, of which none remain (that I'm aware of).
