I am not a chemist, but a cursory glance at a few web pages suggests that the reaction releases mercury vapour, which you probably already know is pretty darn toxic. Might want to see about using an airtight glovebox. Some sources suggest that working with mercury out of doors is okay, since the vapour disperses to a relatively safe concentration (just don't stand close to it)... but I wouldn't want to be the one releasing even a tiny amount of that stuff into the wild.
