PPG CART IndyCar World Series
Dana Rex Mays Classic
Wisconsin State Fair Park (aka the Milwaukee Mile)
West Allis, Wisconsin
200 laps on a 1.000 mile paved track (200.0 miles)
June 3, 1984
This race on the oldest continuing operating race course in the United States would see an instant classic (and trust me, considering how old this race track is, that's saying something) that featured two drivers with a combined 9 Indy 500 poles, 5 Indy 500 wins, 5 IndyCar driver titles and over 50 career wins (The latter two counting their days with USAC). Rick Mears was trying to do what Tom Sneva did the previous year and Gordon Johncock did the year before that: Win Milwaukee the week after winning the Indy 500. Plus, the fact that he hadn't won at Milwaukee since winning his very first race there in 1978 motivated him even more to accomplish that feat. Sneva, on the other hand, was on a roll at the Mile, winning the last three races contested at the Mile and 4 out of 5 overall. As it turned out, Mears and Sneva both qualified on the front row, with Mears on pole, and put on an unforgettable duel that wasn't decided until Mears ran out of fuel a half a mile from the finish, giving the victory to Sneva. It turned out to be his last victory ever at the fabled Mile.
Enjoy!
