  • "Betray your country serve your class". Brilliant line.

The only war worth fighting is war against oppression. Very true, but sadly that is what plutocrats dangle in front us as propaganda with auspices of 'humanitarian intervention' and it's working.

  • Fucking so true, your class before your nation. For too long we've been conned into thinking they're the same. They're no.

  • for me war against oppression, brutal regime, genocide, ethnic cleansing, terror are wars worth fighting

  • I agree with Psycarne. John McLean was a great man and thanks to Alistair his legacy lives on. Thanks so much for posting this. RIP Alistair, so sadly missed.

  • @beahoolie ' A baynote now that's a weapon with a working man at either end betray your country serve you class don't sign up for war my friend'.. how prophetic indeed ..... we can look around the world today and see the import of same.....

  • @malachy1847 Yes quite aware it is anti imperialist and focused around the struggles of John MACCLEAN. History tells us that WW1 was many things, not only but inckuding a spat between dysfunctional monarchical systems and the romanticism of jingoism.

However things do change, and the societies of different nationalities are far more intertwined and interdependent than they were during WW1.

It is a wonderful song of an enlightened man of his time calling for peace, struggling for his beliefs.

  • Let us never forget the genius of your verse Alistair.

You sing loudly and clearly still in so many hearts and minds.

  • Rest In Peace Alistair

"The Only War Worth Fighting For Is War Against Oppression"

  • Sad to hear of Alistair's death. Didn't know until I came on here. So much for the media.

RIP, sir. You fought a great battle. The lower classes have lost a voice to make them heard. But others will emerge. They always do.

  • Alistair will be deeply missed.

  • You will be deeply missed comrade.

  • @beahoolieThis song is antimperialist wherebyJohn McClean [one of the Red Clydesiders] was arrested and charged with sedition he wouldn't bend to the court while in prison went on hunger Strikes during same was Force fed.. History tells up that WW1 was a spat between disfunctional first despotic cousins! Gingoism [extreme patriotism] was used to send a generation of the European working class to the trenches! Nothing changes! " Betray your Country serve your class don't sign up for WAR!"
