This was quick repair job I just did on a 75,000 BTU Modine unit heater for a three car garage. The thermostat wire got broken off of the control box, the line voltage connections inside the box were poorly connected and on top of all that the customer was not aware that they had a wall switch that powers this unit. I found it as I was trying to determine why the control circuit was getting no power. What started out as a simple broken stat wire from banging into the unit with an aluminum ladder, ended up being what we in the trade call a "combination problem." This just goes to show you that a technician must always go that extra step sometimes to thoroughly check your equipment. Finding those poor connections inside the control box probably saved me another service call. This is one of my repeat customers, who refers a lot of work to me.

  • I need a furnace like this for my garage. There are two Peerless Hanging Gas Furnaces from the 1950's that are in very good shape. Both for $150. Are the older ones like I am looking for any worse efficient than this model here?

  • @BrentAudi If the heaters you are looking at are from the 1950's, you would be wise to take a pass. Anything that old is bound to be almost ready for the junk pile. As far as efficiency goes. The equipment has come a long way in 60-years. You can get draft induced/electronic ignition models now that are safe an over 80% energy efficient. I would not recommend "buying" ANY type of heater from the 1950's. If somebody were to give them to you free of charge, that would definitely be more like it.

  • Yeah, those babies are easy peazey to work on. Doesn't get much more simple than that. Most of our distributors are pushing those new Reznor units. I haven't really taken a close look at them, really had no need to. But, they don't look as easy as the old Modine. Wish me luck, I'm going on a No Heat up north tomorrow. I was back and fourth on the phone all day with this guy asking? Then he calls me in the afternoon and said his 20yr.old Janitrol just went down. He decided he wants to replace it.

  • Yeah, Da Quick Fix O' Da Week....... Glad I found the poor 120V connections inside the control box while checking the line-voltage. Another satisfied "repeat" customer.

  • @BrentAudi If there in good shap i would get them they will last you a long time too.

  • @NLBheating Thanks for the input! I just have a soft spot for older appliances and heating equipment. They are in beautiful shape. The chrome is crazy! I don't think they were used very much. I just hate stuff going to the crusher.

One unit that I would love to find is a Reznor that had a cage blower instead of a fan. I see them and they all are still going strong.

  • Well, as usual, another great job!

  • Ya gotta love how simple and accessible those unit heaters are. Been quite a few years since I've installed or worked on one.
