Hi My name is Robert Beeson

My great green idea for the an Xprize competition is to harness the most powerful and infinite energy source, the sun.

The competition is to create a cheap, rugged, recyclable, and scalable photovoltaic cell.

The rules to ensure these qualities are:

1. Ten cents manufacturing cost per watt. This would enable the cell to be made and sold the regions of the world where cheap electricity is least accessible.

2. It must have an energy efficiency of 70 percent. This means that out of the whole spectrum of photovoltaic energy that reaches the cell, 70 percent of it must be converted into usable electricity. By using the whole spectrum of light, instead of just the most powerful rays that only come from direct sunlight. These cells must produce electricity in areas that do not receive as much direct sunlight as much of the worlds population is covered by clouds or pollution every day.

3. It must be able to withstand a child with a hammer. Although this is not the most scientific of bars, the conceptual image of a 4 year old banging on this thing with a hammer is not that far off from the circumstances that this type of technology should be able to endure. Such as roofs, backpacks, cars, and cell phones.

4. It must be scalable. That means it has to be able to fit on the slimmest of cell phones or big enough to power an electric semi truck going across the country. How to do this is not important. What is important is that anyone no matter their training or expertise should be able to change the size and shape of these cells to best suits their needs.

5. This technology would be of no use to the world if it is not designed to be infinitely recyclable in the first place, not as an afterthought. If we toxify our planet while trying to save it. That solves nothing.

This technology would not only save the world from the energy crisis, it would make living in a digital world sustainable forever.

Imagine a world where everything is powered from current solar energy. Not in a grid or a pipeline, but powered directly from the sun to the device.

This is the safest and most sustainable way to power the world. All we need is a little incentive.

  • Huh? This is your great idea? Ok, my idea is I want world peace and it should be cheap and easy.

All you've done is describe the probelm. You have come up with nothing thousands of people, maybe hundreds of thousands, haven't already thought of.

Do you have any original thoughts about the solution?

  • wait where is your video?

  • they already have it its called power plastic it use more of the light spectrum produces at night and comes in a roll and is guesstimated to get down to 10 cents a watt the problem is some of the financial backers are big oil companies

  • I checked it out. They are on their way to qualifying under my criteria. But they are not there yet.

More importantly, oil companies may be evil but to not support the actually beneficial things that they do is counterproductive towards solving the climate crisis.

  • Love your enthusiasm and courage! Keep the hope alive!

  • the most stupid video i ever seen

  • I think that energy alone will not save the world, it will take a massive paradigm shift, but don't worry keep fighting over money, the shift will come or we will perish, no rush... love you all hope the earth doesn't decide love is not enough

  • exiting and sexy?

im no steve jobs, but i am a big follower of

Cradle to Cradle By William McDonough & Michael Braungart

they talk allot about solar being the best of all the sustainable resources for many reasons. bio mimicry, portability, reliability, and sheer power. but read the book.

thier main focus is also your main focus. green cities. they are designing some for china that almost follow your whole video. which i really liked.

did you check out the discussion on society changes?

  • calm down we worked it out.

    to answer your questions.

the hammer thing is not measurable, i am totally open to suggestions on how to measure envriromental durability.

    745.7 W - units: 1 horsepower

750 W - astro: the amount of sunshine falling on a square metre of the Earth's surface on a clear day

so no, not by itself. but combine it with a decent battery and a great motor. and you can ad allot of miles to your trip. truckers plug into the grid whenever they take breaks anyways.

  • "any who i would love peacefully debate the merit of our ideas." Really? I think that is what Robert tired to do- it looks more like you're interested in insulting him than answering his questions. How is a childs hammer blow a specific, measurable metric? Even at 100% efficiency, do you think the size of solar cell needed to power a semi would fit on one? How is this exciting and sexy for people? p.s. I have a video, and I am not drunk.

  • Try to keep it classy, beething...

  • Sorry if my comments seemed harsh. I don't have an entry in your contest. My 6 newest videos are entries in another contest altogether.

My comment on your video was trying to point out that "framing" the problem saying it should be this and that, is not in any way a solution to the problem. You called it "your idea". Its not an idea. Just as my wanting world peace doesn't doesn't count as an original idea about how to get world peace.

    No offense, good luck.
