How interesting. I suspect that the idea was to save the trouble of carrying gold coins. There were undoubtedly many attempts of forgeries. These notes look pretty primitive.

@tnakai1971jp Banknotes have been issued by the Bank of England for over three hundred years. Standard ten pound notes were issued in the mid 1700s and during Brummell's golden years on the London scene, £1, £2 and £5 notes were in use. In Regency times, the phrase "a roll of soft" was used to describe a wad of banknotes. So now you know! :-D

What I find surprising is that banknotes appear in this drama. So, the Bank of England was already printing money at the time?
