On 16 March 2010, the Syriac Universal Alliance (SUA) submitted one written and two oral human rights related statements to the 13th Session of the Human Rights Council at the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG). The lack of legal status of the Aramean people in Turkey was highlighted in the statements.

The first statement dealt with effective political participation of minorities and was put on the agenda under item 3 (Promotion and Protection of all Human Rights). It contained brief remarks by the SUA on the report of the UN Independent Expert on Minority Issues, Ms. Gay McDougall. Among other things, the SUA noted that political participation of a minority requires that the respective community is first of all recognized as such. The Aramean people in Turkey do not have any legal status and consequently they enjoy no minority rights.

Unfortunately, the last few seconds are mute in this video (not on the UN Webcast site, however, where this video originates from): "And the last point: What happens if a country does not recognize certain minorities, as in the case of Turkey and the Syriac Aramean people?"
