You can call yourself what every you want it doesn't matter
whoever you pay your taxes too that's who owns your ass, try writing a letter to the gov that collects your tax, declare your independence and notifying you will no longer pay taxes to their gov as you are currently forming a new gov and request that you be recognized by the international community and watch how your ass is made into an example
When you try to home in on what is the nuts and bolts of britishness, it really defies explanion because it too broad a question. Its like trying to define the nature of Time. As soon as you look at it beyond a simple clock, you find it impossible to define. Its closer to a spirit and a feeling. Who can define and explain a spirit. You can only feel it and revel in it. In recent years its the british spirit that has been under attack. Same for the identity of other european nations.
it seems like an utter waste of time these citizenship tests, all you have to do is lie through your teeth, provided you can lie in english, and you're in. there is no check up to make sure you are adhering to the promises you made before recieving your citizenship. i'm sure the majority are proud to be a citizen of the UK, but there are always those who dont come here to make the country better, dont bother to integrate etc. but either way you cant be activly british cause thats raicst.
when you have thousands of kids, and more, going to school without speaking english, in the UK, thats a problem, and when you have foreign workers who are happily chatting in their language, ignoring signs about speaking english at their work place thats a problem, Britishness comes with speaking the language. Its just common sense
Jack Straw: "Devolution is a fundamental way of binding the Union."
Oh really, Jack? Then why is the SNP is power in Scotland right now, as you speak? Why is there English nationalism all over England now? Why do 70% of the British public say they agree with a break-up?
@905rocks Thanks. I'm all for The U.K. and Britishness. I think the droning depressing tone of the commenator in the above documentary is shameful. The world gathered in Berlin last month to celebrate German unity, yet he seems to think that British unity is somehow suspect.
Tolerance, moderation, freedom, not being European or American, the Union Jack; common sense; lack of extremism; trial by Jury; Freedom of Speech; The Royal Family; Contempt for politicians. These make us British.

Did we have this before 1999, Jack?
