Three Moods were created in 2002, soon after Andrey Rubtsov joined the Russian National Orchestra Wind Quintet - winner of the 2005 Osaka chamber music competition.

Sadness is the second movement of the cycle.

Besides many performances by RNO wind quintet in Russia, Spain, USA, in Bermuda (Bermuda music festival) it was included in concert programms of 14 other wind ensembles who performed it in Brasil (Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet), Russia, China, Lithuania, England (Gallimaufry ensemble, Bellavente Wind Quintet), Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria (Adi's Quintet), Spain (Ciudad de Soria), Venezuela (Ad Libitum quintet), Morocco (Arirang-Quintett), and California (GreatNotes).

  • A french horn is not considered a wind instrument just so we are clear.

  • @ezwaitloss

I'm not sure you know what you're saying.

Check Wikipedia for 'wind instrument', for example.

never heard of wind quintet before. i thought there's only string quarter before.....

  • it's a woodwind quintet, so its got Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, and French Horn.

and its spelled T-H-E...I don't understand where that came from but it bugs the hell outta me.

  • The original name of woodwind quintet was wind quintet, which allows for the use of the horn. The International Horn Society recommends that HORN be recognized as the correct name for our instrument in the English language.

[From the Minutes of the First General Meeting, June 15, 1971, Tallahassee, Florida USA]

  • Maravilloso !! wonderful . It`s a master piece !! bravo Andrey

  • This didn't sound emotional or sad at all to me. It seems to lack heart and soul.

  • @ezwaitloss Yes it is. It's not a woodwind, but it is a brass wind. The classic wind quintet is flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and the horn in f (aka "french horn").

  • French horns are brass instruments, not woodwind. This is normally taken to be fact. 'Wind instruments' mean different things to different people. For many, it is a shortened form of 'woodwind instruments'. For others, it includes brass.

    happy, now?

wind quintets are an unappreciated ensemble. However, they're great fun to write for and can sound wonderfully expressive.

  • @ezwaitloss The french horn is associated with both the woodwinds and the brass....however BOTH are wind instruments as it takes air to make sound.

  • the french horn is included in both the woodwinds and brass, BOTH are wind instruments.

  • @ezwaitloss Well, what is it then, percussion? lol

  • this is a beautiful composition. that horn players tone is wounderful... i hope i can sound like that one day :)

  • @ezwaitloss I think you mean it's not considered a woodwind... you blow air through it, thus = wind instrument. Pretty simple.
