Woolsey Opening Remarks

We have two basic energy systems: transportation, which is mostly oil-based, and electricity, which uses about half coal. Today these systems are not really connected and we need to approach them differently. We need to reduce carbon-based fuels because of the greenhouse gases they emit and because of the national security problems they create. By shipping over $1 billion a day overseas, were funding anti-American activities in a variety of countries. We need to end oils strategic importance as quickly as possible.
