To the south, on the road to Dakshinkali - about 3 kms from our Chobhar Resort - is Taudaha Lake, the only lake in Central Nepal. It is known to harbour more than 40 varieties of birds mostly dependent on wetlands. The greater area encompassing Taudaha, Bagmati and Pharping harbours a total of 120 wild birds. A brochure listing the different varieties of birds located in these areas is in the process of publication. Birds in this area include the Rudy Shelduck, the Common Coot and the Common Pochard.
For those interested, we can plan and organize Bird Watching activities specially for you and according to your requirements, provided we are given one to two weeks' notice. A typical bird watching group is composed of ten people, accompanied by one experienced guide in ornithology. If the group numbers more than ten, additional guides will be required. Given sufficient notice, we can arrange for the group to be provided with binoculars, telescopes, and other equipment. Transportation has to be arranged and paid for separately.
To determine total cost and other arrangements or reservations, contact Ms Rita Dulal in our Chobhar Promotional office in Thamel. Telephone 2191010
A SPECIAL WORD ABOUT TAUDAHA LAKE The lake was created by God Manjushree as a home for the serpents who lost their home when the valley was drained. Legend has it that the King of the Naga (or Serpents) - Karkotak resides to this day in the epicenter of the lake. The walls of his palatial home are said to be richly decorated with sapphires, rubies and other precious stones Today, because the lake is sacred, swimming and boating are strictly forbidden. Twice a year, townspeople come to the lake in long processions to pray and venerate this sacred site. It is not uncommon for the people to throw coins and other valuables into the lake, for good omen.
