practically every good lyric soprano has had a go at Elsa but it takes a special sound and approach to elevate it. Tebaldi's Elsa is unmatched.

Quando sento dire che era un soprano limitato mi viene da ridere! Basta ascoltarla qui o nelle opere di Rossini x capire che non era affatto vero. Non sarà stata la più moderna, la più innovatrice ma perché è semplicemente stata la più brava!
I can just lough when I hear that she was a limited soprano! Listening to her here or in Rossini's operas makes understand that it was not true at all. May be she wasn't the most modern or the most innovater but just because she was simply the greatest!

Judging from this performance if she made a switch la Tebaldi may have been one of the most Wagnerian divas of last century. It is one of the most Beautiful voices I have ever heard. I remember receiving my Christmas gift of a CD player (age 11). My first double CD - bought in the Boxing Day sales - was Renata singing a selection of Italian arias. The voice is a miracle.
