(Fluorescent light bulbs) contain (mercury). The standard fluorescent lamp contains approximately 20 milligrams of (mercury). While there are no known health hazards from exposure to lamps that are intact, improper disposal of (fluorescent) lamps can contaminate the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that over 800 million lamps are produced each year to replace 800 million lamps that are then disposed. Since 1 gram of (mercury) is enough to contaminate a 2-acre pond, there is enough (mercury) in those lamps to contaminate 20 million acres of water.

(Mercury) is toxic to the human nervous system. Chronic breathing of (mercury) vapors can cause a range of physical symptoms, including inability to coordinate body movement and impairment of hearing, speech and vision. Exposure to (mercury) in other forms can lead to skin rashes and kidney damage.

  • Did you notice a difference in your health when you took the metal fillings out?

  • @bikeracergirl Not dramatically really. I still have about 4 more to get taken out. They are only partially covered by insurance so I have to save my pennies! LOL

  • I think the white fillings have problems too. As for cleaning up one of these light bulbs, I think you're supposed to use a wet cloth, not sweep or vacuum.

We all know many people don't dispose of things properly so it should be interesting to see what happens with these bulbs.

  • I just broken one am I gonna be ok I'm scared

  • @fiddlerdave I don't understand why people fear these lightbulbs and make such a fuss about replacing them. I don't think their concerns are valid.

  • I don't mind using CFL's I use them all over my house. But soon LED's will replace them it's just progress.

  • The "Idea (Dept. of Energy - Gov't) is to have us all with CFLs by 2014!

  • @newalm lol CGL bulbs give off such an ugly hazy and yellow glow. I wonder how LED's are in comparison.

  • @fiddlerdave So is it possible to be exposed to mercury from LCD HDTV's or computer monitors since they contain a UV Fluerescet back light? I'd hate to have to spend the extra cash and switch to LED(Mercury free), but if i have to i will considering i've been sick for quite a while and my mercury levels are very high(if this is even the cause) based on a few urine tests i had done.
  • The exposure to mercury from carelessly handling the dust from a broken CFL is LIKE EATING A CAN OF TUNA FISH! If you are even a little careful, its like a NIBBLE of TUNA FISH! Its a TINY amount. It has no comparison to the amount in a thermometer, which is HUGE!

Sweep it up carefully, indeed take the old bulbs to recycling, but it is NOT something to FEAR!

  • vuum the powder into multiple layers of plastic bags. Then mark the bags with some sort of hazardous symbol and bring the bag to a proper disposal facility.

  • DO NOT use vacuums!!!! When mercury or it's vapors get into a vacuum, it will destroy the vacuum from the inside out by forming brittle alloys with the metal components. It will also use the vacuum engine to spread the vapors throughout the area. The best choice is to either, call a hazmat team, or purchase reagent grade sulphur powder and cover the spill area with the powder wait at least a few hours for the sulphur to form a less harmful compound with the mercury metal, then SWEEP ( do not va
