If the horse has never been ridden before you should take it slow and let him know you are there. Gain his trust then try to ride. That could have ended very badly with you getting thrown on the fence, against the trailer, ran over and fro the others helping you could have gotten hurt badly also. And flip flops were a stupid idea. :P
