Free Weights Versus Machines

So basically, machines are only superior to free weights if you're clinically obese, very old, or retarded.

Leg press "seems" better if you want stronger legs?
You would NEVER see the strongest persons in the world using leg press for stronger legs.
As a general rule of thumb ALWAYS look at the best in the world and what they do.
Regardless if its weight training or baking.

Freeweights hands down !

@siscoekidd It seems our applications are very similar. Prehaps my original comment seemed a little too generalised. what I should have said is this.#
If you are obese concentrate on low impact movements and cardiovascular exercises until your feel comfortable with the addition of weights in to your fitness regime. This will help minimalise the chance of injury and improve vascular efficiency to further aid the gains from weight training. ;)

Ha! I love your thinking Jim...and I too am not doubting your successes...but there are approaches that work well.
I know from research and practical application that your appraoch works...no doubt.
Equally, I know that my approach also works.
Just for the record, my approach utilizes; BW (gymnastics) W (weight training) C (alternating forms of cardio) Y (yoga) and N (nutrition).

@siscoekidd The twin idea would not be possible but we could could advertise locally for a certian build type to pioneer some research. nothing to clinical or precise just an idea we could both use to our gains and the clients. let me know what you think. Jim.

@jfmn24 to reach specific individual goals. These include strength training and endurance training that was developed alongside a man called Paddy Doyle who shared his younger life with my father. I guess what I am trying to say is that with the larger more unhealthy individuals the use of cardio training in a pool( as it is with most our clients) is much more effective as a starting point to enable all round fitness. I would be willing to undergo a tesat of some sort over say a 6 month period.
What? the bent over row is NOT a sub for a lat pull down or pushup

@goatkiller68 This is NO DOUBT my favourite aspect of posting videos...the feedback and the processing of information, or lack there of of people often have. At NO point did I suggest the Bent Row is a replacement for the lat pull down and (I have to assume you meant Pull up and not push up). What I did say, was the exercise COMMONLY used to develop the LATS is the bent over row. I hope this helps

@siscoekidd actually at 1:40 you said that the bent over row "is without a question the most common replacement for the lat pull down exercise.
goatkiller68 2 months ago
@goatkiller68 That IS accurate...But lets look at the TOPIC "Free Weights Vs Machines"
When comparing a machine that works the Lats...the Free Weight Exercise of choice is the "Bent Over Row".
Its a comparison piece...

In the instance of the pull up a resistance band can be used as an alternative. you can also do negative pull ups or chin hangs to build up enough strength to enable a pull up. ( having a spotter to help you up can be good too) If you are obese and really cannot do a pull up then stay away from weights and hit the cardio until you can.

@jfmn24 So I cannot argue with your approach as I concur...But doing a collaborative "research effort" would be most interesting. I could and would gladly promote in on my radio and Tv shows. Let me know what you have in mind :-)
