Well, the world has finally managed to blow itself up. Only Australia has been spared from nuclear destruction and a gigantic wave of radiation is floating in on the breezes. Only 2 months are left. One American sub located in the Pacific has survived and is met with disdain by the Australians when it arrives. All of the calculations of Australia's most renowned scientist (Bryan Brown) says the country is at doomsday - get ready. However, one of his rivals say that is incorrect. He believes that a 1000 people can be relocated into the northern hemisphere, where his assumptions indicate the radiation levels may be lower. The American Captain (Armand Assante) is asked to take a mission to the north to determine which scientist is right (and along the way check out the devastation in Alaska & California - seemingly all bodies and vehicles were disintegrated). However, before the mission, all kinds of bland soap opera relationships are played out. Brown & his ex-fiancee (Rachel Ward) battle it out in a love-hate relationship. Meanwhile she also takes a liking to Assante, who is divided in his loyalties to his men and his love for his now-dead wife and children.

  • zeak, how come you get to live you australian bastard? :(

  • The world loves Australia a little more than you think ;). To be honest Australia is not a nuclear power although I do believe that we are seeming we have the majority of the worlds Uranium.

The Story behind this film though is its a Nuclear standoff between Taiwan and the United States. I recommend watching End of Z world. That's what this film is in a nutshell but it goes a lot deeper. (3 hours 36mins)

  • Australia says: WTF mates ^^

  • This movie is a remake of the 1959 "On the Beach," based on the novell of the same name. The novell was based, in part, of the Castle Bravo nuclear test which had unforseen consequences. Originally engineered to be a 6 megaton blast using Lithium-6 fuel with Lithium-7 as an inhibitor (may be the other way around), it turned out that both isotopes were usuable fuel and resulted in a 15 MT blast. It has long been said the 1959 movie is a major reason why WWIII was never fought.

  • if this happend today, as in the entire northern hemisphere being irradiated by nuclear blasts and fallout radiation, we'd be spared thanks to the wind currents that would push it away from Australia, and we'd be made the new Super Power of the remaining world, and New Zealand, parts of South Africa & South America (Argentina) remaining too!
