@beanertowel +1 for the milking comment bellow, but I call bs on the blazblue comparison, which I find perfectly rendered. Stuff may have been drawn that way back in the day, maybe due to hardware/software limitations but come on, blazblue is still hand drawn. KOFII was pure laziness. It may take time to trace the sprites but they could do it. In re to color and shading...You can still "cell shade" and pretty much use any color you want in say photoshop. Laziness and money. That's all it is
@TheNamelessOne786 SNKP is the company that creates King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, basically all those franchises. Sprites can be character designs, but sprites are actually what you see on the screen. They're 2d creations that are drawn by hand or in more modern times, done on computers. In past eras all sprites were drawn by hand. In this era sprites are done on computer if there's sprites at all. SNK stays with the old sprite vision which is true hand drawn creations.
@beanertowel l what is SNK?... and what are sprites (guessing the induvidual charactr design)? apart from that i totally understand now. Because KOF has less computer technology used in its design (CAD)
Hand drawn pixel art done in dot style also takes a lot longer. But the upside is that dot pixel art has a lot more room for true personalized touches like how they shade their stuff. You notice how good the shading in KOF XII and XIII is compared to Blazblue or Guilty Gear? You notice how the animation just seems to be smooth overall rather than the jarring animation that seems to make you go "huh" every once in a while in Aksys games? That's the up side of it.
Not just the hand drawn animation, but how they do their hand drawn animation. Blazblue while 2d is done on a computer. It looks sharp and doesn't show jaggies or dots. BUT it also makes it look very lifeless because there's no true human touch to it. Doing it on computer is a lot faster then SNK's method which is dot pixel art. Dot pixel art requires you to physically draw it all in dot pixel form and that is not really done on pcs as it's all done by hand.

@beanertowel why is that; is it to do with hand drawn animation or something?
