i am a british, ex army (1st btn Irish Guards) from Ireland and Scotland! this song means so much to me and always brings a tear to my eye. just listen and let the music carry you. let Irish politics go and leave them behind in the past, where they belong.

This song provokes so much sentiment but shouldnt detract from the bands ability to entertain us. Has an Englishman with a Scottish father and Irish ancestors, I dont wish to get involved with any political argument When I first read about the Irish famine I was shocked, having travelled through the Australian bush, and toured around the Irish republic, I understand the lyrics of this song. As a catholic and republican I support the freedom of people worldwide to be free and educated.

Singer (lead) is Paddy Reilly, who was band member from 1995-2005 according to Wikipedia.
(Hint, hint.)
Just "discovered" the Dubliners a bit back, here. And wondering how and why we were deprived so.

I serve in the british army and what i am reading below is quite petty and pathetic this song is actually about a 19th century famine. i am based out of ballykinler and have seen previous service here the whole situation is ridiculous whether you are protestant or catholic you are all christians lets act like them for a change and atrocities were committed on both sides in the past and present i myself have personally seen what BOTH sides can do.
