I wouldn't say he was successful in his recovery. The crowd here was so partisan that he could have made the gaffe, paused for a moment & then starting leading a "USA! USA! USA!" chant & have been carried shoulder high from the building. The culture that surrounds American politics is pretty intense, plastic and over the top in many ways and especially when it's a presidential election. It's all miniature flags, attack ads, max. 3 word slogans & devout Christian families with 2.4 children.
