Give up on the visits to the high risk areas.
Give up on short term politics study.
Focus on all the pluses development so evident.
Fed grants pay your education.
Mind their extended investment even if tabloids pull you from your studies and local considerations.

Sorry to hear about your laptop being stolen. I'm pretty sure eBay or craigslist would be your best bet for a cheap replacement.
I too am disturbed by how unrelenting Israel has been with their recent attacks on the Gaza Strip. There must be a better way to attack Hamas directly without hurting innocent Palestinian civilians, but I imagine hatred for the opposition renders the distinction between military targets and civilians moot for some decision-makers on both sides.
