It is wonderful that this debate continues over half a century after these ideas were stumbled upon. It shows true relevance. Merce was a true artist, his work will be missed.

Moral , ontological, aesthetic, Platonic -- they loved the true and the beautiful and their music travels forever beyond the spheres.

In the future, Cage will be looked at as Mozart.

No, he won't because cacophony is counterintuitive. I always play Cage for my liberal friends to prove that there has to be order in the universe. It hasn't failed me yet.

Actually, there is structure to his work. It's not random sounds like you might think. He used the IChing to ascertain all elements and free him from his own personal likes and dislikes so that he could be open to new sounds that he may have otherwise avoided.

He said "I don't hear music before I write it." He was being literal about sound. He didn't have a melody in his head like most composers do. The first time the piece is performed is the first time he would hear it.
