In Japan, St. Valentine's Day is regarded as a day for women to give chocolate to men. The custom took hold in the 1970s partly due to sales promotions by the Japanese confectionary industry. Today, chocolate is also commonly given to a woman's lover, spouse, friends, parents and colleagues. Although some say the Japanese version of St. Valentine's Day, in which only women give chocolate to men, is not fair, others regard the custom as a good opportunity to promote better human relations
