The question of why do male lions want to live in a pride when they could hunt and survive alone... The answer is they want to mate with lionesses and these lionesses live in a pride. To mate with them, male lions have to take control of a pride and wait for the right time to mate with the lionesses when they are in heat. The other reason is when male lions are in a pride, they basically do not need to hunt anymore as they simply snatch the kill from the lionesses and eat their fill !!! Simple??

Lions will win any situation against any predator, because they work as a pride. call it weak or not, but its the best possible adaptation of all the predators we have. they are the top predators of this world because of that.
Male lions have to be alone most of the time because they are patrolling the borders, i can think of no other reason. they are social animals and that makes them top predator/boss.
True the African Male lion lives a primarily solitary life style. And can brought down a 2 ton cape buffalo all in his own effort. Which still raises the question. If a lion is capable of surviving on his own, why live in a group?
