Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego paleobiologist Richard Norris describes the "greenhouse world" of 50 million years ago and how past climate events such as the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum drastically changed life in the oceans. Most coral reefs disappeared and ocean predators had less prey to eat. Because of fossil fuel use, similar conditions may return to the planet and remain in place for tens of thousands of years.
