this is dedicated to all of my IC friends on facebook, and everyone else that has IC. Hoping to spread the word about Interstitial Cystitis so that people can get diagnosed quicker, and have hope, and know that they're not alone.
Description of Interstitial Cystitis:
Interstitial cystitis (in-ter-stish-uhl sĭ-stī'tĭs), or as we call it, IC, is a condition that consists of recurring pelvic pain, pressure, or discomfort in the bladder and pelvic region, often associated with urinary frequency (needing to go often) and urgency (feeling a strong need to go). IC may also be referred to as painful bladder syndrome (PBS).
IC can affect anyone. More than 4 million people in the US have IC. Between 3 and 8 million women and 1 to 4 million men in the US may have IC. Estimating conservatively, that's 1 out of 77 people who have IC. Or, if further research supports the higher prevalence rate, thats 1 out of every 28 people. That's more than the number of people with breast cancer, Alzheimer's diseases, and autism combined. Children are also diagnosed with IC, but prevalence data is not known.
