iOS or Android? This question's answer is...
Better is relative. There is no overarching winner or leader. It all depends on what you're measuring and what you value. A strategy's strength is often also it's weakness in comparison to an opposite system.
I'm forced to be referring to stock Android, no mods for comparison's sake. This is already an exercise in folly.
market strategy - iOS is only sold by apple (it's strength & weakness) - Android can be distributed by anybody (it's strength & weakness)
interoperability with other products - Apple has full family - Android devices are currently like islands
accessory support - iOS has a great ecosystem - Only leading Android devices might get attention
support - with apple, it's one company - with Android, it's possibly more than one company
community modification - iOS can be jail broken, but officially locked down - Android is far more open
UI flexibility - IOS is simplicity defined - Android has animated wallpapers, widgets, management
Types of users - iOS is high cost; users spend money in ecosystem - Android is low cost; users may not spend as much money
Restoration options - iOS has find my phone, iCloud backup - Android has backup / restore
Core OS features - iOS is basic, slow evolution potentially due to popularity - Android is replete with solid stock features, advancing fast
Keyboards - iOS has quite nice predictive text - Android has quite nice gesture keyboard with others
Software updates - iOS is updated regularly to most modern devices - Android is updated regularly, but few modern devices
App marketplaces - apple controls everything (S&W) - Google has a more open policy (S&W)
Software / hardware congruency - iOS is in lockstep with devices - Android is all over the map
Ease of use
- iOS is simple
- Android is becoming far less complex
Multitasking
- iOS puts a priority on the front experience
- Android operates more like a "classic" machine
Further points - iOS is better at driving fit & finish - Android is better at driving features
Neither one is better for everything - and consumers need both of them to do well to spur a neverending cycle of competition.
My preference is just as irrelevant in this conversation as your preference. The real discussion is in how each platform offers exciting opportunities to consumers.

Seriously? How is it perfect with these shortcomings? Photosphere is a gimmick- is it really as important as inter-app communication or changing default apps? Android as an OS isn't perfect, but neither is iOS by a longshot. I would say that on iOS most apps look nicer; frame rates, rendering and such... but there is no consistency across the OS unifying the apps as they build up. Maybe Jonny Ive can change some of these basic needs- but I'm not holding my breath either

Because despite all that, all the features WORK properly and has a perfect ecosystem. Not some unfinished thing that I see with photo sphere on my Nexus 4. Android OS feels like an unfinished project.

If they are both so similar then IOS wins because you have to PAY MONTHLY for ANDROID. nuff said.

iOS is ANYTHING but polished! For example: Why are simple tasks like brightness, wifi, bluetooth, etc. not easily reachable- and they are the most toggled settings? Shouldn't you be able to delete contacts from the main contact list?. Shouldn't I be able to view/download an email attachment from docs & spreadsheets to audio files? Why is there no visible filesystem where each app can go and fetch files? Despite all this, why is iOS considered polished?

On the contrary, I've seen quite a few old tymers who use a Galaxy Note 2. They tried using an Iph5, but despite the extra 1" screen on the length from the Iph4 and the crisp Retina screen, their vision isn't what it used to be, and the Note 2's larger and wider screen provides a better experience for them.

It makes sense. Most Android users are tech geeks and developers, mostly teenagers and youngsters. iOS is a much more polished platform. Not much customization, but that's the point of iOS, it's an OS that works. People like businessmen most likely don't give a shit about rooting, flashing custom ROM, and major customization.

In my opinion, you pretty much have an iphone in an android (if you want) because of apps like iLauncher that gives androids iphone interfaces, and lock screens that do as such
