A 1986 performance of the so-called "Le Corsaire pas de dex" with the splendid Tatiana Terekhova & a very young & fabulous Farukh Ruzimatov.

**Personal note--
I was fortunate enough at the age of 9 to see this film on T.V., & so decided to take my first ballet class. I then got a hold of my own copy of it, & I have never ceased being amazed every time I watch it. In particular, La Terekhova, seen here at the absolute height of her career, is a wonder to behold. The young Ruzimatov is still very well schooled, something that dwindled away as his flamboyant style got the better of him in later years.

**Notes--
This performance features yet another old variation taken from its original context, & thus made seemingly "generic" - Terekhova performs a variation traditionally associated with the character Gamzatti in "La Bayadère". The variation is by Drigo, & is taken from one of Petipa's later revivals of his colossal ballet "Le Roi Candaule", specifically the ballet's celebrated "Pas de Vénus". At some point early on it ended up lodged in "La Bayadère", where it has remained ever since. The variation is heard here in its original orchestration I'm sure, with the harp effects likely representing the magic allure of the goddess Venus.

The caption at 0:43 reading "initially staged in 1880" is yet another incorrect bit of history that saturates the world of classical ballet. A revival of "Le Corsaire" was staged by Petipa in 1880 for the ballerina Eugenia Sokolova, but the ballet was initially staged in Paris in 1856, while the duet seen here did not exist until Samuil Andrianov (noted teacher of Balanchine) created it 1915.

  • Terekhova was wrongly tagged as a technical dancer, when in reality she was so much more. Her musicality and textbook Kirov style combined to imbue her steely technique with inspired elegance.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this MrLopez, she is one of my favorite ballerinas and it is such a rarity to see her on film I absolutely love her

  • La Terekhova is so elegant, correct, sublime in this pdd... I still have my VHS back home, keep it as a treasure. Thank you very much for posting it on YT and enlightening us with such wonderful information!

  • At least she is still with "us" as an invaluable coach. Let's hope she bounces back after the loss of her husband.

  • Thank you very much for sharing such a rare footage like this. Terekhova doing one of her signatures, "Gamzatti" and pre-Ruzimatov Faroukh!

    This is a treasure!

  • How beautiful it is to remember what brought ballet to our heart, then a time comes like in my case when we don´t remember anymore how life was before ballet.... I dances since I can remember, and that is the most wonderful thing ever happened to me... love that comes with joy, tears and blood, everything is worth it! greetings to you mrlopez! wonderful vid by the way, magnificent couple a russian miracle

  • She is my favorite dancer and I can't thank you enough for this. What an incredible artist in everything she dances. If only there was more of her dancing on video...what incredible technique and presence. Oh yeah, he's good too, though I hear he was a pretty unreliable partner.

Your notes are really great too. Again, thank you!

  • Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you.
