In 2006, Zach Jones from Humble, Texas lost his life to rabies. He was taking a nap in his room when a bat woke him up. Not knowing that bats could carry rabies, he did not get the shots.

Rabies is on the rise in U.S. wildlife: skunks, raccoons, foxes, coyotes and bats. Respect wild animals - don't go near them!

  • @missfatalefemme Thank you for your comment. His parents said that he encountered the bat in March and then he died from rabies in May - I think it was about 6-8 weeks before he showed symptoms. Estimates say that rabies does kill over 55,000 people worldwide every year. But, some experts say it might be more due to the fact that people in developing countries often do not have autopsies. The best thing is to spread the word about the dangers of rabies - be smart don't go near wild animals.

  • I will post on facebook so people know.

  • @kathybaca That's great! The more people know that rabies exists in the U.S. - the better.

  • I'm sorry, and I hope they find a cure once symptoms start.

  • @kathybaca To find a cure would be so wonderful! Too many people, mostly children, die of rabies around the world.

  • In england atleast we give a crap about rabies and do sank about it the people in your countrys sit there with there lazy feet up on the tables going so what

  • @TommyQ72 The problem in the U.S. is that the general population don't think it's a problem. In the 1950s and 60's the U.S. conducted a nationwide public health campaign to eradicate canine rabies. They were really successful in mandating that dogs have to be vaccinated. But, the problem now is that rabies is present in the U.S. wildlife- skunks, coyotes, raccoons, foxes and bats. England has a very agressive campaign against rabies.

  • fox did turn out to be rabid.

If you don't mind me asking, what do they do when the person begins going through the various symptoms? Do they give them shots so they're unconscious through the worst part? They don't let them just lay there going through hell like some of the old video show, do they? My gosh I can't imagine what a horrible situation that is for both the victim and the family...so so sad. But good job in educating other people.

  • The sad thing is that because rabies is so infrequent now in the U.S., that people are uninformed about it. Rabies shots are mandatory for licensed pets, but people don't realize so much about wildlife. A friend of mine was just jogging down a road with some fields along the sides, and a red fox ran after her, caught up, and bit her on the leg. A man stopped to help and stood on the fox's neck while she ran to get help but unfortunately it bit him too, and they both needed to get shots. And the

  • @morningwhispers if your family shows symptoms it is most likely to late go to the doctors get your shots

  • I am so sorry for your lost I came on here to look for answers as I am really frightened about our home infested with bats.. and we have had them inside now three times.. and our dog was biten and is quaranteened for 6 months.. as we are all now more at risk.. I guess I wanted to know about the signs of what to look for.. as I have a son here too.. if you know how to help please send me a message thank you so much ..

  • That's so sad. He looked like he showed great promise. How long did he go without seeing a doctor? Until he showed symptoms? I know Rabies kills something like 50 000 people every year. That's too many if you ask me. I'm glad there are people like you bringing this to the publics attention. No one should have to die of Rabies, especially not vibrant and young men such as Zach. I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully you can prevent many people from losing their life to Rabies. Rest in peace Zach...
