What you are seeing is ice crystals, not actual pollution.

Jet exhaust is very similar to car exhaust - just that at high altitudes the water in it freezes into these ice clouds called contrails. They sometimes spread out to cover the sky if weather condition are right.

was it a coincidence that when the sies over Britain were closed last week, due to the volcano in Iceland, the sky was clear blue, as soon as the planes returned the high white cloud returned, I live close to London so there are always planes above, it is very rare nowadays to get a clear blue sky, the contrails seem to spread into a complete cloud above. I often see jets like 777s fly overhead with no visible trails. It depends on the weather. They are VERY hard to spot though.
