You aren't going to damage the monitor as long as you use small magnets.
All CRT's have a built-in degaussing coil around the tube. Just turn it off for a few hours and let it cool down.
Turn it back on and it's good as new !

I had to degauss a few old monitors using a magnet... Magnets near CRT also can be useful!!!

Now that's what I like to hear, something positive and worth reading, nice.

@DevilDan83 you can still use it because those monitors had a degaussing option, which can refresh the motitor massively. and i mean massively!

windows xp

i want to destroy my works old PC screen! It hurts my eyes! how can i destroy it? water ot magnets?
-
you can not, idiot. Its shielded.
-
The only real damage I can see doing this is that a large magnet like a "hockey puck" sized magnet could conceivably bend the shadow mask. Anything that fits in your hand you're ok. I find that fans put out quite a large ac field and it degausses afer you put magnets on the screen.
-
there's a video of a kid using a magnet as big as his hand and he presses it against the screen, and makes a big black hole in the pixels
-
DEpends if it magnetses the shdow mask
i wish for you permanent screen damage!
srsly, that can damage a crt.

That's why I do it with an old monitor that no one uses anymore.

that was stupid.. the magnetic field of Neodymium magnets are stronger.. and it can start messing up your harddrive permanently from few feet away

Now that you mention it our boss's HDD (his monitor) did break just recently. Could that be it?

Nah, I like my hard drive. I have no interest in that monitor though. I did that to our TV, when I was younger. There was a spot for a couple of days but it went away.
