Returning home after two years I decided to re-build the afterburner and get some better pics. Basically all I changed was the fuel injector from the "+" shape that injected the fuel axially directly in front of the flame holders, to a ring shape that injected the fuel radially into the center of the case. I also bolted the flame holder frame to the casing, and added an actual spark plug instead of shitty wires I was previously using. At first I had an issue with ignition, however I added a fuel nozzle holes that aimed outboard to the casing wall lined up with the spark plug in hopes to inject more fuel directly ahead of the spark plug (that was lined up to the flame holder) so the fuel to air ratio was higher to help the ignition. However, this ended up injecting too much fuel and causing a hot spot along the casing wall (which you can see the separate flame at frame 1:35). This is not a actual full afterburner design, there are a few other pieces missing, including the actual turbine engine upstream of it, however it is the same basic design.

  • I highly recommend connecting 1 or 2 more vacuum pumps to the single exhaust outlet. To boost the speed of the exhaust. And to also try and design a smaller ring shaped flame holder. Just to really see the power of after burning. Extending the tail pipe and creating a nozzle would help too.
