Well about Ridley Scott, Kingdom of Heaven held very close to his personal beliefs on religion and morality. What Coppola says here could be applied to the studio reducing the length, changing KoH and the quality suffered so that it could be more marketable. It's the same thing they were trying to do to Coppola on Godfather saying, "No! Not Pacino! No! Not Brando!" I guess it's a testament to how more often than not, studios don't know how to make good movies that people will actually love.
