I love the humanities! But why can't a scientist read them on his own time? In the Middle East it would not be surprising for an intellectual to know and write poetry on the side.

Why would a humanities professor care about undergraduate students majoring in the humanities? Because their non-productive jobs are dependent on people being dumb enough to major in the humanities. Other departments acquire funding because they are lucrative for a university and the research they do actually matters. Humanities departments, however, just church out horse shit called "scholarship" that even they don't want to have to read. Don't give your money to these people.
