they dont have to be touching, but it makes stronger sounds if they are, and no it can be anything not aluminum, just not magnetic

do all the coils have to be touching? I used one continuous wire, but not all of the wraps were touching. is that fine? also, I used an empty toilet paper roll. does it need to be metal/aluminum?

@scr34m1ng it doesn't have to be aluminum. It cant be magnetic so anything steel is out of the picture. The advantage of having aluminum vs a toilet paper roll is that aluminum can handle the heat produced by the voice coil while the toilet paper roll might not be able to handle the heat produced by the voice coil especially when the sub is playing at a really loud volume. You wouldnt want your voice coil to catch on fire. that would suck.
