The Pop-up Café Program provides outdoor public seating in well-designed public spaces, allowing people to sit and socialize where sidewalk seating was previously unavailable.
The pop-up café at Local (144 Sullivan St.) was installed and put into operation in July 2011, creating a public space where 12 people could sit at the same time, in the street space that would ordinarily have been occupied by a single car, oftentimes for a number of days. The café is frequently used by residents from its community, and is seen here being used by 96 people in a single day.
The owner of Local (Craig Walker) feels that the newly installed public space is "definitely good for business, especially in a way that creates new space for the community."

Yeah, what's going on with public benches these days. They seem sometimes to almost be just a memory.
