James Kalm is accompanied by Kate for a visit to Peter Dobills four hour endurance piece titled Receiver. With a list of individual actions and videos included in group shows locally Ab Uno is the first comprehensive overview tracing the arc of Dobills performance career. In Receiver, the artist is suspended in a pool of milk, while a bowl placed overhead drips a continuous stream of milk into his nose. By constructing extravagant sets in which to carry out his actions, Dobill seeks to add a visual component to the performances. Also featuring a clip of Hanging one of the artists first pieces. Includes interviews with artist Peter Dobill, and Ben Abbot, Director of Nurture Art,

  • Would we as the art viewing public be complicit and partially responsible if an artist were to die or become seriously injured in the process of making art? An artist bleeds to death after cutting his penis, they die from an infection or receive internal injuries in a car crash, possibly, or get shot by their own volition. What's the purpose?

I still watched it, of course.

I'm reminded of Videodrome, and JK, is this the art underground or are there other things to quell my morbid curiosity?

  • I think we're in a summing up period of re-discovering and re-presenting modes of work from the past. Performance has been getting some serious attention, and this is a new offshoot of that type of work. Morbid curiosity is one of the human foibles that attracts and holds the observer.

  • "Butt flavored flan", an instant classic.

  • wow, absolutely amazing. you're so brave peter, it's ridiculously inspiring/intimidating. look at what we're capable of:) good for you. love love love. congratulations, you achieved something so unique

  • Yes I know your no longer equipped, btw what porn site is this guy on. If you want to see real talent look at Odd Nerdrum, I was once told taht to do abstract you have to know what your doing in all the levels of painting or sculpture, being a classical realist not giving names, this is complete junk.

  • Hey Ron - Tried to contact you, but don't know if I got through.

    Thanks for the "excellent". Best-

  • haha, yay! ...bout time performance art made a BIG comeback! awesome vid james, thanks!

  • I was at a show in Knoxville,TN. where there was a shirtless artist in a wheeled cage. He would move about and finally started reading a poem. A friend was busy heating up a twisted copper wire with a torch while he read it. It was a home made branding iron. At a specific point in the reading the friend branded his back (it was red hot) while cage man kept reading the piece. I watched even though I knew what was going to happen! Was it art? I don't know, but it's all I remember from the show.

  • once again, thank you james kalm

  • I like his denial of theater..

  • wow, this was crazy!!
