Another RARE video from me from my extensive collection, Curtly is just magnificent, I'm a big fan of Atherton- they dont come much tougher from England- but Curtly was just always on the spot and setup batsmen so well, that killer inducker got so many guys LBW after a few balls tailed away, amazing.

  • Atherton last dismissal the speed gun said 84 mph and consensus knowledge was that Ambrose at that time in his career lost a lot of pace....

  • @abner5640 Yeah but Ambrose was never seriously fast, his asset was his height, when he slowed down his pace wasnt threatening, but his accuracy and general plans for batsmen were top class. 84mph, thats not all that quick anyway, isnt 90mph just over 140k's? Ambrose never went near 150ks even at his peak.

  • @robelinda2

90 mph is 145 kph. Anyway, what do you think was Ambrose speed at his peak? Of the late 80's/early 90's version I've seen of him, I'd say he was pretty damn fast. Pretty close to 90 mph.

  • @SPMJ Probably 145 at best, his crazy height and bounce made him awkward, rather than sheer pace. When he was bowling in tandem with Patrick Patterson or Ian Bishop you could see the speed difference. Ambrose more deadly though by miles!

  • @robelinda2: Very true indeed Rob. Ambrose in general displayed more aggression, especially against Australians and English batsmen so I think people thought he was equally aggressive in his speeds. However, I think Courtney Walsh was faster than him and also nastier in terms of bouncers. I was comparing the two videos of Ambrose-Walsh vs Atherton and it seemed that Walsh preferred bouncing Atherton and Ambrose pitched it up and got it to move off the seam with bounce!

  • @ritadhishankar Agree, Walsh was the bouncer man for sure, but was equally effective with his slanting off cutters, but got more caught behinds. Ambrose seemed to go for killer bouncers and lbw's with his off cutter. Neither swung the ball at all really, Ambrose maybe did occasionally, but was more a cutter. DAMN GOOD BOWLERS!!!!!

  • What's amazing is all of those dismissals were lbw, bowled, caught behind the wicket. The widest of which was gully. No mistimed pull shots or caught on the boundary or caught at midoff. Just clean 'bowlers' dismissals. Showed why Curtley was so good/great. Just hit good areas all the time. Beast.

  • @abner5640

He was quick at the start of his career and gradually slowed his pace down. He probably bowled in the mid 140's. But what made him was his almost unerring accuracy and bounce. On top of that, he could move it off the seam in both directions. Some spells of his were almost unplayable - it was all a matter of survival for the batters, forget about runs. I don't think I've seen another bowler have as many spells like that.

  • Eh....best vid on utubez?

  • Ambrose the Gr8.......Miss ya buddy.

  • @robelinda2 you have got to be kidding.... you make it sound like you timed him at every occasions.. I heard from many commentators that he was easy 90 miles bowler.... you could tell too,

  • what video is the west indies away 98 series on ?

  • Oops, I cannot read, I meant 17 times :)

  • I always knew Ambrose got Atherton out a lot, but 19 times?! Thanks for the awesome video.
