Folks are attempting to compete the trouble is that Apple runs differently to most companies.

This is a over simplification:

Apple is run by essentially a dictator that goes over the products that are being developed and if it does not feel or look right they don't get to market.

Other companies are run on cost and pleasing shareholders therefor the biggest profit for least work gets the win.

So the end result here is that a product like the iPhone would never get the go ahead elsewhere.
