It came here last year for the big Fiero Convention and went across the Ambassador Bridge into Ontario for a side trip. I didn't know it then, but the old Iron Duke was dying. It got me there and back, though.

This winter, Dave, my mechanic, came out to the waiting room and said, "It's time for a transplant." I fought back the tears, but I knew he was right, and that my car was in good hands. He's one of the few people who can take an Iron Duke out of a Fiero through the top, without dropping the rear suspension.

With its new, remanufactured engine, new front bearings and a four-wheel alignment, it feels like a brand new car. Here's to another 140,000 miles.

  • What in the world was wrong with the engine? I have the same engine in an Olds. The engine is known for reliability.

    What happened?

  • The #4 piston cracked; that's why it kept losing power. Amazingly, it got me to Detroit and back last year, and would have kept on going forever, just without the acceleration and the cold weather performance. I was happy to have gotten almost 140,000 miles out of it, when most people didn't think it would last 60,000. Tough little engines, those Iron Dukes.

  • Damn. My engine has about 160K miles. I wonder if I'm living on borrowed time.

  • Most of my miles were in stop-and-go traffic, in Chicago, in all kinds of weather. If I'd done mostly highway mileage, the engine would probably have lasted longer. But the old one lasted 25 years, so I can't complain.
