Agreed. It was a very cynical plan, not to modernise but decimate the railways.

its never occured to me b4 but i imagine qutie a few of the loco drivers and staff were dissapointed by the changes to the (eventually) more efficient diesel locos.

at 2:01 is Bittern the A4 4-6-2 Pacific, Ive seen her at the Watercress and on a tour in March 2010 going through Bushey at speed. So sad that steam locos demised, great to see many floating around, but they really were something else, they lived and breathed. Beeching culled so many lines and cut off communities. However, as sad as it was the end of steam locomotives was inevitable :( they were fantastic :( Delighted the younger generation like me can still see them :)

I agree 100% with that. I say the following... "the steam engine will never die or be outdated!"

@boazrg i did 50yrs ago,a long lasting memory im proud of,when we first saw them in our region,we called them spaceships, because of the size and blinkers. a strong and handsome engine, scrapped before they were hardly worn in HAPPY DAYS

@lelboy It was more Ernest Marple who was the criminal.. he was the one who ordered the Beeching report and manipulated money away from the railways into the roads.. not surprising really he was a major sharehlder in a road construction company! The whole thing was a conspiracy to close down our railway system!

It will certainly be interesting in a few years as the winter weather gradually worsens and the Solar flares that are due to strike, in a technological age of alot of electricity, it will all be rendered useless, and the diesels with their electrics will fail. It will be back to the steamer and mechanical signals

So true, because at the same time of beeching cutting costs, he cutting his most profitable income
Richard Beeching. A criminal of the first magnitude............
