Claude Debussy (1862-1918):
Rêverie (1890)
Walter Gieseking (1895-1956), piano
Recorded in 1939

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859 - 1923), was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.
He painted the famous poster for Le Chat Noir (French for "The Black Cat") which was a 19th-century cabaret in the bohemian Montmartre district of Paris. Debussy and Satie were frequent visitors in the beginning of the 1890s (the latter worked there as a piano accompanist).

  • It's lovely to hear this beautiful performance again - and, second time round, I'll spare you all the cat jokes!

  • @paulprocopolis But that pun -- Clawed Depussy -- was great fun!

  • Hands down best interpretation of this piece. He doesn't water it down like other pianists, it doesn't fall into the washout. Each note is distinct, yet well connected and the emotion is perfectly placed. Mi gusta.

  • Sukiiiii! But also, this piece played by you which I love very much, mooi! Please upload your version of it.

  • CATS!

  • Gieseking essays this marvelously - and without a trace of kitsch....

  • Debussy, Gieseking, and cats--for me an irresistible combination!
