My wife has visited Torez (Summer 2008). She has photos of children who are in their teens that look like 2 or 3 years old that are still bed ridden. They are not allowed to get out of their beds. She was playing with 1 child - pat a cake - and the child was laughing and actually sitting up in bed. The care givers were frowning and did not like this. They came and made him lie back down in the bed. How sad that children are not even allowed to play a simple game. Another room had a child that was so frightened by just having people in the room. She was terrified that someone wanted to simply hold her hand. Babies had blank stares on their faces. The government is trying but simply does not have the resources to help these children. The staff did not approve of our group being there providing simply cookies and fruit. Older men and women were also there - they had challenges but were not allowed to even try to lead a productive life. With so many outside agencies willing to help - why won't the leadership of this particular orphanage accept it? We adopted 3 children from Ukraine and we love the country there. We have friends who still live there. We respect the government and love the people. It is only this facility and those that do not care for the sick and the weak that we do not like. We will continue to pray for these children and the helpless.
