is there an actual city of hollywood, or is it just a neighborhood?

Hollywood was a farming community from the 1880s until its incorporation as a city in 1903. It remained independent until 1910, when it annexed itself to Los Angeles in order to gain access to its water supply. Although it has been part of Los Angeles for a century, it still feels like a town in many ways.
