Sure, having an imaginary friend could help people cope with all kinds of things, its often a coping mechanism in the face of extreme stress or adversity. I would argue though, as adverse circumstances decrease IE people get access to education, food, health care, comfort, the necessity of religion decreases. So it is simply a coping mechanism based on a false belief. The MOST rational people, that is, the most educated and scientific, show the smallest preference for religion.

If a loving God existed why do animals eat each other? Why do diasters kill children? If there is no evidence to support the existance of a loving God then why should anyone believe in one? The Biblical God wasn't loving he according to the Bible had people killed for working on the sabbath, told Abraham to kill his own son, told people to kill other people in contradiction of his own law that thou shalt not kill. Had ark of covenant built in contradiction of law forbiding making of idols, etc.

For something to exist in DISPROVEABLE. Everything around us in Science is just a theory but it is accepted. However fantastical the disproving is, you can.

With religion you cannot prove nor disprove it, so it is imaginary.
