yeah man that's the skydome, look for it under Settings Manager -> Desktop Cube -> Appearance Tab -> Skydome.
Are you using Compiz or Beryl?

how do you put the image in the back when you are rotating the cube?

If you mean the skydome, that's just done from the skydome settings in the ccsm manager, it the rotate cube section if I remember right. If you mean the moving matrix desktop background... basically just good search "xwinwrap gnome desktop" and read up all you can.
